Selection
How we choose.
The criteria, the stages, and the safeguards — published so that anyone can hold us to them.
Applications are not currently open. No application cycle has been published yet — the fund is in its preparation stage.
This page is published now so that future applicants and nominators can understand the process in advance.
What we are looking for
The fund seeks one exceptional individual in India each year: a person who has already invested real effort in a meaningful pursuit, and for whom one specific opportunity could make a genuine difference. This is not a popularity contest and not a competition in hardship narratives. We look for commitment that can be seen, progress that can be described, and a next step that the award would truly unlock.
The criteria
Six criteria, 100 points
Reviewers assess each application against these published criteria. The weights are versioned by cycle — they are never changed for an application already under review.
- 20
Sustained commitment and initiative
Evidence of sustained effort, self-directed activity, perseverance in practice and meaningful engagement with the applicant's chosen pursuit. Duration alone is not sufficient.
- 20
Demonstrated progress and ability
Relevant work, achievements, milestones, demonstrated learning, progress or practical evidence of ability. Evidence must be appropriate to the discipline and the applicant's circumstances.
- 25
Opportunity unlocked by the award
The connection between the support requested, the barrier identified and the meaningful next step the applicant intends to take. This is the highest-weighted criterion. Hardship or dramatic storytelling does not substitute for evidence that the award would be useful.
- 15
Clarity and feasibility of the plan
Whether the applicant describes a specific, credible use of the award and a realistic next step. Professional presentation or elaborate budgets are not required.
- 10
Potential for growth
The credible potential for further learning, development or progress arising from the proposed opportunity. Unrealistic claims are not rewarded.
- 10
Responsible use and follow-through
Whether the proposed use of funds is considered and purposeful, and whether the applicant identifies a reasonable way to follow through. This criterion is never used to judge friendliness, similarity to the founder, or inferred personality.
The rating scale
- 1Very limited relevant evidence.
- 2Limited evidence with substantial gaps.
- 3Credible evidence meeting the criterion.
- 4Strong and specific evidence.
- 5Exceptional evidence in the applicant's context.
Where the information needed for a meaningful assessment is missing, reviewers may record Insufficient information — clarification needed instead of a low score.
For each criterion: points = weight × (rating − 1) ÷ 4. A rating of 1 contributes nothing; a rating of 5 contributes the full weight. Totals are calculated from human-submitted scores — they never choose a winner on their own.
The stages
From application to decision
- 01
Published cycle and eligibility
Each year's application cycle has published eligibility conditions, criteria and weights, and an award amount. Nothing is open until an administrator has approved and published the terms. If no cycle is open, this site says so plainly and invents no dates.
- 02
Application and completeness
Applicants create an account, complete the application form, and may save a draft and return to it. Before review, objective checks confirm the application is complete, files are valid, and eligibility conditions appear to be met. A person — never a machine — resolves anything unclear, and unclear information is never treated as grounds for rejection.
- 03
Independent human review
Each application is assessed by at least two independent reviewers where practical, using the published criteria and rating scale below. Reviewers see only applications assigned to them. One reviewer's scores and written judgments are not shown to another until independent review is complete.
- 04
Shortlisting and deliberation
Completed reviews are brought together in a private deliberation space. Differences between reviewers are made visible without treating disagreement as proof that either reviewer is wrong. Reviewers can always return to the applicant's original words and evidence — never to a summary alone.
- 05
Final decision
The final decision is made by the authorized human decision-maker and recorded with a written rationale, the rubric version that applied, and the date. A numerical total may support deliberation but never determines the outcome.
- 06
Notification
Applicants are told the outcome through the contact details they provided. Recipient details are never published automatically — publication of a recipient's name, image or story requires their separate, explicit permission.
Conflict of interest
Every reviewer declares any personal, family, professional or financial connection to an applicant. A reviewer who declares a conflict does not review that application; an administrator resolves the conflict under the published policy and reassigns the work. Recusals and reassignments are recorded.
Human oversight
People make every judgment. A person decides eligibility in ambiguous cases, a person writes every assessment, and a person makes the final decision and signs it with a written rationale. Nothing about an applicant's appearance, accent, photographs or social-media presence is ever treated as merit.
The role of AI
The fund is exploring an optional, strictly limited review assistant — and only to make administrative work more manageable, never to remove judgment, responsibility or accountability.
If and when it is used, it may: summarise an application neutrally, map submitted evidence to the published criteria with citations to the applicant's own words, flag missing information, and suggest neutral clarification questions.
It will never: select a winner, reject an applicant, decide eligibility, produce an automatic score or leaderboard, judge personality or integrity, or send a decision to anyone. AI processing is disabled until the process, privacy protections and output quality have been reviewed and approved — and applicants will be told clearly if it is ever switched on.
Privacy
Application information is private. Applicants can see only their own application and its status; reviewers see only what they are assigned. Uploaded documents are stored privately and are never available through public links.
